What Is Tawaf?

Tawaf (طواف) is the act of circumambulating walking in circles around the Ka'bah, the sacred cubic structure at the heart of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Every pilgrim performs Tawaf as a central rite of both Hajj and Umrah, and it can also be performed as a voluntary act of worship at any time when visiting Makkah.

One Tawaf consists of seven complete circuits, walking counter-clockwise (with the Ka'bah always on your left). Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), located in the eastern corner of the Ka'bah.

🕋Ka'bah
Black Stone Start Here
Yemeni Corner Touch Here
Counter-Clockwise Direction

Walk counter-clockwise keeping the Ka'bah on your left. 7 circuits = 1 Tawaf.

The spiritual significance of Tawaf is immense. Just as celestial bodies orbit their centres and the angels circle the Throne of Allah, pilgrims circle the House of Allah in an expression of total submission, love, and devotion.

"Tawaf around the House is similar to Salah except that you may talk during it. So whoever talks in it, then let him talk only good."

Al-Tirmidhi, classified Sahih

Like prayer, Tawaf is an act of worship which means it has specific conditions that must be met for it to be valid, and specific etiquettes that bring its full reward.

Conditions for a Valid Tawaf

Before walking a single step around the Ka'bah, make sure these conditions are met. Failure to meet them may invalidate the Tawaf:

State of Wudu (Ritual Purity)

You must be in a state of ritual purity throughout the entire Tawaf, just as in Salah. If your wudu breaks during Tawaf, stop immediately, renew your wudu, and restart the circuit you were on you do not need to restart the full Tawaf.

Note for women: Women who are menstruating or experiencing post-natal bleeding may not perform Tawaf. They must wait until their period has ended and they have made Ghusl.

Cover the Awrah

The awrah must be covered as it is in prayer. For men performing Tawaf al-Qudum, the right shoulder is deliberately exposed (Idtiba) but the Ihram garment still covers the rest of the body properly.

The Ka'bah Must Be Inside Your Circuits

You must walk around the entire Ka'bah, including the Hijr Ismail (the semi-circular enclosure on the northern side). Many pilgrims make the mistake of cutting through the Hijr Ismail this does NOT count as a complete circuit. Walk around the entire structure including Hijr Ismail.

⚠️ Critical: The Hijr Ismail is considered part of the Ka'bah. Cutting through it means your circuit is incomplete and must be repeated.

Counter-Clockwise Direction

Tawaf must be performed counter-clockwise, keeping the Ka'bah on your left side at all times. Walking clockwise would be invalid.

Seven Complete Circuits

Exactly 7 complete circuits are required. If you lose count, assume the lesser number (e.g., if unsure whether you completed 3 or 4, assume 3) and continue to 7 from there.

Begin and End at the Black Stone

Every circuit must begin at the Black Stone and end at the Black Stone. The green light on the wall of Masjid al-Haram opposite the Ka'bah marks the starting line clearly.

How to Perform Tawaf: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps in sequence. Read through this guide completely before entering the Mataf (the circling area) so you can walk with confidence and focus.

1

Enter Masjid al-Haram and Make Niyyah

Enter Masjid al-Haram with your right foot, saying "Bismillah, Allahuma salli ala Muhammad, Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik" (In the name of Allah, O Allah send prayers upon Muhammad, O Allah open for me the doors of Your mercy).

Make a sincere intention (Niyyah) in your heart to perform Tawaf for Allah. Specify which Tawaf you are performing: Tawaf al-Umrah, Tawaf al-Qudum, Tawaf al-Ifadah, or voluntary. Niyyah is made in the heart you do not need to say it aloud.

2

Idtiba (Men Only for Tawaf al-Qudum)

If you are a man performing Tawaf al-Qudum (arrival Tawaf), expose your right shoulder by pulling the top part of your Ihram (rida) from under your right armpit, draping it over the left shoulder. This is called Idtiba and is Sunnah for this Tawaf only.

Note: Idtiba applies only to Tawaf al-Qudum (arrival Tawaf). For other Tawaf types, keep both shoulders covered.
3

Position Yourself at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)

Walk to the starting point. The Black Stone is embedded in the eastern corner of the Ka'bah. Face it directly. The green light mounted on the opposite wall of Masjid al-Haram indicates the starting line.

Stand so that the Black Stone is to your right meaning you are facing the Black Stone with the Ka'bah on your left, ready to begin walking counter-clockwise.

4

Perform Istilam Acknowledge the Black Stone

Istilam means acknowledging and honouring the Black Stone at the beginning of each circuit. There are three ways, in order of preference:

  1. Kiss it if you can reach it safely (usually only possible when it is quiet)
  2. Touch it with your right hand then kiss your hand
  3. Face it and point with your right hand saying "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" (most pilgrims do this)

Recite:

بِسْمِ اللهِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillahi Allahu Akbar

"In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest."

Important: Do not push or cause harm to others to reach the Black Stone. Pointing while saying "Allahu Akbar" is fully valid and carries the same spiritual significance.
5

Begin Walking Counter-Clockwise

Begin walking counter-clockwise, keeping the Ka'bah on your left. Walk at a comfortable, steady pace. Stay focused and make du'a throughout.

In circuits 1, 2, and 3 (for men during Tawaf al-Qudum): perform Raml walking briskly with short, quick steps, with your chest slightly forward. This is a Sunnah established by the Prophet ﷺ.

In circuits 4, 5, 6, and 7: walk at a normal pace.

Raml note: Raml (brisk walking) is Sunnah for men only, and specifically in Tawaf al-Qudum. If crowded, do not push others simply walk as quickly as possible without harming anyone.
6

Touch the Yemeni Corner (Ar-Rukn al-Yamani)

As you pass the southwestern corner of the Ka'bah (the Yemeni Corner), touch it with your right hand if possible saying "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar."

If you cannot reach it due to crowds, do not point toward it or gesture simply continue walking. Unlike the Black Stone, you do not gesture to the Yemeni Corner when you cannot reach it.

7

Recite the Special Du'a Between Yemeni Corner and Black Stone

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone (the last stretch of each circuit), it is highly recommended to recite this du'a, as established in Hadith:

RECOMMENDED DUA BETWEEN YEMENI CORNER AND BLACK STONE

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhab an-nar

"Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good, and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire."

This du'a is reported in a hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn al-Sa'ib (RA) in Abu Dawud and is considered authentic by scholars.

8

Complete All Seven Circuits

Repeat steps 4–7 for each of the seven circuits. Each time you return to the Black Stone (the green light line), perform Istilam again (gesture, say "Allahu Akbar") and begin the next circuit.

Between the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner (the three sides other than the Yemeni-to-Black Stone stretch), make personal du'a in any language, recite Quran, or make dhikr (subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar). There are no fixed, mandatory supplications.

Counting tip: Many pilgrims use a tasbeeh counter or click their fingers. If unsure, always assume the lower number and continue to 7.
9

Pray Two Rak'ah at Maqam Ibrahim

After completing the 7th circuit, move to the area near Maqam Ibrahim (the stone bearing the footprint of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ). Face the Ka'bah and pray two Rak'ah.

It is Sunnah to recite in these two Rak'ah:

  • First Rak'ah: Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109)
  • Second Rak'ah: Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)
Practical note for 2026: Maqam Ibrahim can be extremely crowded. If you cannot pray directly at Maqam Ibrahim, pray anywhere in Masjid al-Haram. The obligation is fulfilled.
10

Drink Zamzam Water and Make Du'a

After the two Rak'ah, drink from the blessed Zamzam water. Zamzam dispensers are located throughout Masjid al-Haram. Drink while standing, begin with "Bismillah," drink in three breaths, and make du'a while drinking this is a moment of tremendous blessing.

Your Tawaf is now complete. Alhamdulillah.

Duas During Tawaf What to Recite

One of the most beautiful aspects of Tawaf is that there are no mandatory, fixed supplications for each circuit. The Prophet ﷺ did not prescribe specific duas per round. You are free and encouraged to make sincere, heartfelt du'a in your own language throughout.

⚠️ Important Note on Popular Tawaf Dua Books

Many printed Tawaf guidebooks assign specific supplications for each of the 7 rounds. While there is no harm in using these as inspiration, it is important to know that these round-by-round duas are not proven in authentic hadith. As noted by scholars including Shaykh Ibn Baz, no specific supplication for each circuit is established from the Prophet ﷺ. Heartfelt personal du'a is always preferred.

What Is Recommended to Recite

At the Black Stone Each Circuit (Istilam)

بِسْمِ اللهِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillahi Allahu Akbar

"In the name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest."

Between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone (Authenticated Hadith)

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhab an-nar

"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the Fire."

What to Do During the Rest of Tawaf

For the remaining stretches from after the Black Stone through to the Yemeni Corner engage in any of the following:

  • Personal du'a in your own language ask for anything good: forgiveness, health, family, guidance, Jannah. This is a supreme moment to pour your heart out.
  • Dhikr SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illAllah
  • Reciting Quran any surahs or ayaat you know
  • Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ Allahumma salli ala Muhammad

Types of Tawaf in Hajj and Umrah

Not all Tawaf are the same. During Hajj, pilgrims perform multiple different types of Tawaf, each at a specific time and with a specific purpose. Here is a complete overview:

Type of Tawaf When Performed For Who Status Followed by Sa'i?
Tawaf al-Qudum
(Arrival Tawaf)
Upon first arriving in Makkah Hajj Ifrad & Qiran pilgrims Sunnah Yes (Sa'i may follow here for Qiran)
Tawaf al-Umrah
(Umrah Tawaf)
As part of Umrah All Umrah performers & Tamattu pilgrims Obligatory Yes Sa'i always follows
Tawaf al-Ifadah
(Major Tawaf / Tawaf al-Ziyarah)
10th Dhul Hijjah (after sacrifice & head shaving) All Hajj pilgrims Obligatory (Rukn) Yes Hajj Sa'i follows for Tamattu
Tawaf al-Wida
(Farewell Tawaf)
Before leaving Makkah (last act) All Hajj pilgrims Obligatory (Wajib) No Sa'i after this
Tawaf Nafilah
(Voluntary Tawaf)
Any time when in Makkah Anyone visiting Makkah Voluntary No Sa'i required

🚨 Critical: Tawaf al-Ifadah is a Rukn of Hajj

Tawaf al-Ifadah cannot be missed. Unlike most Hajj obligations that can be compensated with a sacrifice (fidya) if missed, Tawaf al-Ifadah is a Rukn a pillar. If it is not performed, the Hajj itself is not valid. Similarly, Tawaf al-Wida (farewell Tawaf) is obligatory according to the majority of scholars missing it without a valid reason requires a compensatory sacrifice.

Common Tawaf Mistakes to Avoid

These are the most frequently observed errors during Tawaf. Be aware of them before you begin so you can avoid them:

❌ MISTAKE 1
Walking through Hijr Ismail
Cutting through the semi-circular enclosure next to the Ka'bah. Hijr Ismail is part of the Ka'bah walking inside it does not count as a complete circuit.
✅ CORRECT
Always walk around the outside of Hijr Ismail, keeping it to your left along with the Ka'bah. The Mataf extends around it.
❌ MISTAKE 2
Pushing to kiss the Black Stone
Causing harm to others to reach the Black Stone. This negates the spiritual benefit and can be dangerous in crowds.
✅ CORRECT
If you cannot safely reach the Black Stone, face it, raise your right hand, and say "Allahu Akbar." This is fully valid.
❌ MISTAKE 3
Gesturing to the Yemeni Corner
Raising and pointing toward the Yemeni Corner when unable to touch it. Unlike the Black Stone, the Yemeni Corner should be touched not gestured to.
✅ CORRECT
Touch the Yemeni Corner with your right hand if you can reach it. If not, simply continue walking no gesture is made.
❌ MISTAKE 4
Breaking Wudu without restarting
Continuing Tawaf after wudu has broken (e.g., passing wind, bleeding, etc.).
✅ CORRECT
Stop immediately, leave the Mataf, renew wudu, return, and restart the circuit in which you broke wudu. Completed circuits do not need to be repeated.
❌ MISTAKE 5
Reading specific "per-round duas"
Using booklets with a different fixed dua for each of the 7 circuits as if they are mandatory or authentically established.
✅ CORRECT
Use authentic dhikr, personal du'a, or the established dua between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone. Your sincerest personal prayer is most valued.
❌ MISTAKE 6
Losing count and starting over unnecessarily
Losing track of circuits and restarting from zero out of caution, performing 14 circuits instead of 7.
✅ CORRECT
If unsure, assume the lesser count (e.g., assume 3 circuits not 4) and continue to 7 from there. Use a counter or track circuits by moving a ring between fingers.

Practical Tips for Tawaf in 2026

🌙

Go After Midnight

The Mataf is significantly less crowded between midnight and Fajr. This is the best time for a peaceful, focused Tawaf especially for Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah.

🏛️

Use Upper Floors

The upper levels of Masjid al-Haram have their own Tawaf areas during peak times. These are less crowded and still fully valid. Helpful for elderly pilgrims or those with mobility needs.

👟

Wear Grippy Footwear

The Mataf floor is polished marble and can be slippery, especially with the constant movement of crowds. Wear lightweight, comfortable, slip-resistant sandals during Tawaf.

💧

Hydrate Before You Start

Drink Zamzam water before entering the Mataf. Tawaf in peak Hajj conditions can take 60–90 minutes. Dehydration is a real risk especially in May/June heat.

📿

Bring a Circuit Counter

Use a simple tally counter (widely available in Makkah) to count circuits. The noise and emotion of the Mataf can easily cause you to lose count even experienced pilgrims use counters.

🤝

Stay Together as a Group

If performing Tawaf with family, link arms or hold hands to stay together. The Mataf is one of the most crowded places on Earth during Hajj. Designate a meeting point outside in case you get separated.

📱

Book Tawaf Slots via Nusuk

In 2026, Saudi authorities continue to manage crowd flow via the Nusuk app. Check if Tawaf time slots need to be pre-booked through your Hajj group or the app itself.

🧡

Prioritise Focus Over Physical Closeness

Many pilgrims feel they must be in the innermost ring. But Tawaf performed from the outer edge of the Mataf with full focus and khushu' is better than an inner-ring Tawaf lost in pushing and distraction.

🌡️ Heat Warning Hajj 2026 (Late May / Early June)

Hajj 2026 falls in late May to early June. Temperatures in Makkah at this time regularly reach 40–45°C (104–113°F). When performing Tawaf especially Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah hydrate heavily beforehand, try to go during cooler hours, and do not push through heat exhaustion. Your health and safety are obligatory to protect in Islam.

Frequently Asked Questions How to Perform Tawaf

What is Tawaf?
Tawaf is the ritual of circumambulating (walking around) the Ka'bah in Makkah seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. It is a central rite of both Hajj and Umrah, and is considered one of the most spiritually profound acts of worship in Islam.
How many times do you walk around the Ka'bah?
You walk around the Ka'bah exactly 7 times (circuits). Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) in the eastern corner of the Ka'bah. Walking more or fewer than 7 complete circuits makes the Tawaf invalid (unless it is the first 7 of an intended voluntary Tawaf).
Do you need wudu for Tawaf?
Yes. Being in a state of ritual purity (wudu) is a required condition for Tawaf, similar to prayer. If your wudu breaks during Tawaf, stop immediately, leave the Mataf, renew your wudu, and return to restart the circuit you were on. You do not need to repeat circuits already completed.
Is there a specific dua for each round of Tawaf?
No. There are no authenticated, specific supplications prescribed for each of the 7 circuits. The Prophet ﷺ did not prescribe round-by-round duas. You are encouraged to make personal du'a in any language, recite Quran, and make dhikr throughout. The only specifically recommended du'a is the well-known "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan..." to be recited between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone.
Which direction do you walk during Tawaf?
Counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise), keeping the Ka'bah on your left side at all times. You begin at the Black Stone, walk toward the door of the Ka'bah, continue around the back, then complete the circuit back at the Black Stone.
What happens if you accidentally walk through the Hijr Ismail?
If you walk through the Hijr Ismail (the semi-circular enclosure on the northern side of the Ka'bah), that circuit does not count, because the Hijr Ismail is considered part of the Ka'bah. You must restart that circuit from the Black Stone. Make sure to always walk around the outside of the Hijr Ismail.
Can women perform Tawaf during menstruation?
No. Women who are menstruating or experiencing post-natal bleeding are not permitted to perform Tawaf as it requires ritual purity (wudu). This applies to all types of Tawaf. If a woman's period begins during Hajj, she should wait until it ends, make Ghusl, and then perform the Tawaf. For Tawaf al-Wida specifically, if a woman is unable to perform it due to menstruation at the time of departure, she is excused as confirmed in Sahih Bukhari.
What is the difference between Tawaf al-Ifadah and Tawaf al-Wida?
Tawaf al-Ifadah (also called Tawaf al-Ziyarah) is performed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah as part of the main Hajj rites it is a Rukn (pillar) of Hajj and cannot be missed. Tawaf al-Wida is the farewell Tawaf performed just before leaving Makkah at the end of the trip it is the last act before departing and is obligatory according to the majority of scholars (Wajib). Missing it requires a sacrifice (fidya) unless there is a valid excuse.
